new tool: half size dress form

I ordered a half scale dress form to work on while I design my pieces, because I figured it would be faster and save me material to iterate on a smaller scale. It came in the mail yesterday and I’m so excited to work with it! In addition to saving me time and money, I think it will also be mentally easier for me to be less precious about details while experimenting, knowing that I’m working on a small scale prototype and not a final piece.

I’m not finding much information out there about considerations or process when using a half size dress form, other than work by the legendary Madeleine Vionnet. I’m just going to dive right into it and record what I learn here.

look what i found: vintage button cards

I got these old button cards at an antique sale. They’re so cute, I’ll probably never take the buttons off them! The “pearl shirt buttons” card is my favorite.

penguin books

I love Penguin Books. When brilliant designer Jan Tschichold redesigned their covers in 1949 he (literally) wrote the rule book on Penguin book covers. I’d love to collect some early Penguin books, as I’m sure we’ve already got some pretty old ones back home.

Lately Penguin has been teaming up with amazing graphic artists to produce deluxe editions of classic novels. They recently released a “couture inspired” collection, three books with covers by super talented and acclaimed fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo. The collection includes Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice and The Scarlet Letter. Try to read some feel-good happy ending type stories inbetween.

look what i found: vintage letter stamps

Picked these up at the antique fair a while back. I think a few pieces are missing from the set, but it’s great to have so many in their original box. A great find, I’d say!

The set has more than just letters. I think there were originally more of these, but my set only has 3 left.

A peek inside the box - upper case, lower case, numbers, and a few extras.

And here's what the stamps look like, stamped!

look what I found: metal buttons

Check out these awesome metal buttons I got at the Alameda Antique Fair this month. These might end up on a dapper navy blue jacket, or on a nautical themed dress. I also might just put one on a ribbon and wear it as a necklace. The possibilities are endless!

look what i found: vintage patterns

Sort of by accident, I’ve started a collection of vintage home sewing patterns. My fabulous Mom sends me what she finds, and I buy what I find interesting at thrift stores and the local antique market. Putting the clothing designs aside, the fashion illustrations are priceless to me. Here are some of my favorites:
